About this experience
The Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its steep trails, beautiful forest scenery and quiet mountain paths. Unlike some of the other routes, Umbwe starts with a relatively steep ascent, making it more suitable for experienced hikers who are physically prepared for a demanding climb.
Our 7-day Umbwe itinerary gives you time to experience the mountain, enjoy the changing landscapes and allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude. As you climb higher, you will pass through thick tropical rainforest, beautiful moorland, rocky landscapes and the dry alpine desert before reaching the snow-covered summit area.
During the trek, our mountain guides, cooks and porters will take care of the arrangements on the mountain. Each day, you will walk at a steady pace, enjoy freshly prepared meals and spend the night at designated mountain camps.
One of the special parts of this route is the scenery around Barranco Valley, where you can enjoy impressive views of the mountain's rugged landscape. You will also climb the famous Barranco Wall, a memorable part of the adventure that requires some careful scrambling.
The biggest moment comes during the summit attempt. Starting around midnight, you will make your way towards Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Standing at the highest point in Africa, watching the sunrise over the surrounding mountains, is an experience that makes every step worthwhile.
At Kiwia Africa Tours, we organise this climb with attention to safety, proper preparation and personal care. Our goal is not simply to take you to the mountain, but to give you the best possible experience while respecting the challenges of high altitude.
Are you ready to take on the Umbwe Route and stand on the roof of Africa? Let Kiwia Africa Tours help you make this adventure happen.

Important information
- Info: Your 7-day Umbwe Route adventure with Kiwia Africa Tours begins with an airport pickup from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), followed by transfer to your hotel in Moshi. The package includes two hotel nights, one before and one after the climb. Before departure, our mountain guide will give you a briefing and check your equipment to make sure you are properly prepared. The Umbwe Route is a challenging trail with steep sections, beautiful rainforest scenery and spectacular mountain views. During the climb, we recommend walking slowly, drinking enough water and following your guide's advice to help your body adjust to the altitude. Our team will provide meals, camping equipment and support throughout the journey. Important: The summit is at 5,895 metres, where temperatures can drop below freezing. Proper warm clothing, good hiking boots and a suitable sleeping bag are essential. We recommend arriving at least one day before the climb. Your safety comes first, and reaching Uhuru Peak depends on your health, weather and mountain conditions. After the trek, we will transfer you back to your hotel and arrange your return airport transfer according to your flight schedule. A little advice from Kiwia Africa Tours: Don't rush the mountain. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, listen to your guide and remember that every step brings you closer to an unforgettable experience on the Roof of Africa.
- Requirements: Participants joining our 7-Day Umbwe Route trek should be physically fit and prepared for a challenging mountain adventure. The Umbwe Route is one of the steepest routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, so we recommend this climb for people with previous hiking experience or those who regularly take part in physical activities. You should be comfortable walking for several hours each day on steep, rocky and sometimes slippery trails. Before travelling, we recommend consulting your doctor to make sure you are fit for high-altitude trekking, especially if you have any existing medical conditions. Please inform our team about any medical conditions, allergies or medication you are taking before the climb. Proper mountain equipment is essential, including good hiking boots, warm clothing, waterproof jackets, gloves, a sleeping bag and a headlamp. You should also be mentally prepared for cold temperatures, long walking hours and the demanding summit night. Our guides will monitor your condition throughout the trek, and all participants are expected to follow their safety instructions. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 metres, medical treatment and emergency mountain evacuation.

After breakfast, we will meet our mountain guide for a final briefing before driving to Umbwe Gate, where registration takes place. Once everything is ready, we begin our adventure through one of the most exciting and challenging trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. The first part of the trek takes us through a beautiful tropical rainforest filled with tall trees, thick vegetation and the sounds of birds. The Umbwe trail is steep in several sections, so we will walk slowly and allow everyone to find a comfortable rhythm. Enjoy your first night camping on the mountain. Trekking duration: 5β7 hours. Starting altitude: 1,600β1,800 m. Ending altitude: 2,850 m. Distance: Approximately 11 km. As we approach the Barranco area, the landscape changes into open moorland, with giant groundsels and lobelias adding a special character to the scenery. We eventually reach Barranco Camp, situated beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. This is a wonderful place to rest, enjoy the mountain views and prepare for the next day's adventure. Once we reach the top, we are rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and the glaciers higher up the mountain. We then continue across a series of ups and downs before descending slightly into Karanga Valley. From here, we climb towards Karanga Camp, where we will spend the night. Today's trail takes us through a dry alpine desert landscape, where vegetation becomes very limited and the terrain is increasingly rocky. Although the distance is relatively short, the altitude makes the walk more challenging. We will maintain a slow and steady pace, with regular breaks to help everyone manage the climb comfortably. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you will have lunch and some time to rest. Our guides will explain the summit arrangements, check your equipment and make sure you have everything needed for the night climb.
